The rate of the pyrite decomposition: 2FeS2+C+2H2O-2FeS+2H2S+CO2 was investigated at the total fluid pressure of 100 MPa and 450-600 degrees-C. With the help of the Eugster method and gas chromatography it was determined that the indicated scheme of reaction was realized under nickel-bunsenite buffer conditions. The pyrite-pyrrhotite conversion buffered the sulfur fugacity in the presence of graphite and hydrothermal solutions under routine conditions during hundreds of hours. The rate of the desulfurization was limited by the nucleation defined by the fixed crystallographic directions.
